Organizations

Unlikely Hikers is a great organization if you struggle to see representations of people who look like you participating in activities outdoors. On their Instagram, podcast, and website they tell stories of people that typically do not get their outdoors stories shared. They feature people of all size, race, ethnicity, and sexuality in an effort to show that the outdoors is a space where everyone should feel welcome and encouraged to enjoy it.

National Brotherhood of Skiers: A great organization to read up on, founded in the 1970s to “change the face of the snow sports industry, to enrich the lives of our families, friends, and colleagues worldwide.” They have a scholarship to donate too and other ways to get involved in diversifying winter sports.

Youth Enrichment Services: Founded by Richard Williams in 1968, this is a great local place to volunteer or donate to. They are focused on the youth of the Boston community and giving them opportunities to get outdoors. They run a large ski/snowboard school program in the winter as well as summer track program and other outdoor activities. Several current and former NUHOC members volunteer with them and would be happy to provide you with more information.

Diversify Outdoors: a coalition of social media influencers – bloggers, athletes, activists, and entrepreneurs – who share the goal of promoting diversity in outdoor spaces where people of color, LGBTQIA, and other diverse identities have historically been underrepresented.
